About Us
St. John's on the Point, located in Newport's historic Point neighborhood, was founded in 1875 by a free African-American, Peter Quire, an abolitionist who had worked on the Underground Railroad in Philadelphia and then settled in the Point, a seaside neighborhood settled by Quakers. The cornerstone for the current church was laid in 1894, and today St. John's and its beautiful grounds serve as a cornerstone for the Point and beyond, hosting weddings, Music on the Lawn, self-guided tours, community events and more, together with a vibrant choir school, in faith and holiness.
